City Council candidates forum is Oct. 16
October 02, 2016

Eleven people who are running for City Council positions in Keene will stop long enough to talk about the issues during a candidates forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Keene Community Center. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The public is encouraged to attend. There is no admission charge.

The eight candidates for seats on the City Council will answer questions from 6:30-7:45 p.m., and the three candidates for mayor will respond to questions from 8-9 p.m.

The candidates for the four seats on the City Council (in order their names appear on the ballot) are:

Place 1: Lisa Parrish is running against John Koobs. Both are first-time candidates.

Place 3: Incumbent Donny Gore is opposed by challenger James Belz

Ward 1: Robert Foster is challenging incumbent Lorena Marin

Ward 2: Gwen Beeson and Robert Bischoff are seeking to fill the seat vacated by Mayor pro-tem David Patterson, who decided not to seek re-election.

The mayoral candidates (in order their names appear on the ballot) are:

Gary Heinrich, incumbent James Chapline and Martin Strickland

Each Council candidate will have 30 seconds for an opening statement. After that, each will have 30 seconds to respond to a question. The questions will be asked in order of the ballot. The questions are:

• Talk about your opinion of annexation.

• What ordinances will you insist be enforced or new ordinances will you promote to stop the spread of blight in Keene?

• What do you think about the new Community Center and how should it be used?

• What is wrong with Keene and how can it be fixed?

• What is right with Keene and how can it be maintained?

• How will you determine the will of your constituents in your ward? How will you know your council vote reflects the majority of their opinions?

• As a City Council member, what do you hope to accomplish in the next two years?

• Why should I vote for you?

The candidates for mayor will have one minute for an opening statement. They will be asked the same questions as the Council candidates, plus the following three questions:

• The mayor controls the Council agenda. How open are you to Council members and/or residents placing items on the Council agenda?

• How involved will you be with day-to-day operations of the city?

• What is your opinion on acquiring new debt and increasing the tax rate?

Time permitting, there will be questions from the audience, who will be asked to write questions before being submitted to the moderator.

The terms of City Councilwoman Cheryl Schram (Ward 2, Place 1) and Councilman Robert Cooper (Ward 3, Place 1), expire next year.

Early voting begins Oct. 22 through Nov. 2.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
